In 1931, the local congregation at 19th and Crocker exercised their option in the contract with the former church and purchased the building. Because of the property issues, leadership style and controversy regarding Sister Aimeeā€™s recent divorce and remarriage, plus a reported kidnapping, dozens of churches decided to leave the Foursquare denomination. In all, about 40 churches would withdraw from the Foursquare to form what would become The Open Bible Evangelistic Association. Over the next year, this group continued to tithe to the Foursquare.
